Contact Your Legislator: Reject Death on Demand
A dangerous bill introduced in the Oregon legislature, SB 1003, would drastically expand the state’s already radical assisted suicide law, putting medically vulnerable people at greater risk in Oregon and across the country.

The bill seeks to expand assisted suicide in three key ways, creating a death-on-demand program for anyone in the United States.

  1. Broadening Language of Who Can Participate – Right now, only doctors (physicians) can prescribe lethal drugs or serve as consulting providers. This bill changes the wording from "attending physician" to "prescribing provider" and "consulting physician" to "consulting provider." This allows nurse practitioners or physician assistants to facilitate assisted suicide.
  2. Requiring Promotion from Healthcare Facilities – The bill forces hospices and hospitals to disclose assisted suicide availability to every patient in writing prior to their admission, no matter their diagnosis. These facilities must also post their policies in office and online. In many cases, family members have pressured vulnerable patients to participate in assisted suicide. This disclosure requirement makes it easier for patients to be directed toward facilities that will not object.
  3. Shortens 15-Day Waiting Period – There is currently a waiting period required in Oregon to provide some evaluation prior to prescribing lethal drugs. Mental health and other healthcare professionals believe that the waiting periods are not sufficient. The bill shortens this waiting period from 15-days to 7-days with an exception for imminent death in which the lethal drugs would be administered within 48-hours.

Oregon is already radical on the issue of assisted suicide. This bill would lead to death on demand for our most vulnerable friends and neighbors.

Use the box on the right side of the page to send a message to your Senator urging them to REJECT the expansion of assisted suicide.
