Congress entered its August recess without finalizing the FY24 budget. Thus, meaning when Congress resumes in September, they will have approximately 15 days to pass FY24 to avoid a government shutdown. With most congressional staff back in their home states, it is time to connect with your elected officials and emphasise that there should be no further cuts to community needs. 

This year there is an urgent threat to funding that helps community programs thrive. In the FY24 budget, community needs such as affordable housing, nutrition programs, health care, education, and efforts to combat climate change are capped at FY22 levels. Benefits such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP), commonly referred to as food stamps, have already seen an 80% decrease in 2023 alone. It is time to tell Congress to not further cut these vital programs for our communities. 

As Presbyterians, we cling to scripture as our guide. Jesus reminds us in Matthew’s gospel, “… for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,  I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me… (35-36).” The Matthew 25 Movement of the PCUSA calls us forward with a vision to dismantle structural racism, eradicate systemic poverty, and build congregational vitality. Programs—including government programs—that benefit communities help us as people of faith to follow God’s call to support those in our neighborhoods who need access to housing, food, healthcare, and education. 

Now is the time to urge your Representatives and Senators to prioritize funding for community programs in the FY24 budget. Write a letter or set up a meeting while they are in your home state this August.
