The proposed lease sales include 21 areas off the coast of Alaska, seven in the Gulf of America (formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico) and six off of California. Despite local opposition, the Trump administration is offering areas spanning California’s entire coastline and encroaching closer to Florida’s coast than ever before.
Environmental groups argue that the offshore drilling plan is entirely unnecessary, since the U.S. is already producing more oil than any nation in history. Additionally, Congress passed a law this year that already mandates 30 offshore oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf through 2040, and six in Cook Inlet, Alaska, through 2032.
The Sisters of Mercy in 2017 committed “to pursue education and action against practices of extractive industries that are destroying people, communities and Earth.”
