Patients must have access to the breast imaging they need when they need it. Under current law, widespread access to screening mammography is available to millions without patient cost as policymakers have already recognized the importance of detecting breast cancer early. However, if the results of a screening mammogram lead to a recommendation for follow-up diagnostic imaging or if supplemental imaging is required for individuals at high-risk of breast cancer, this is too often out of reach because patients can face hundreds to thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs for this imaging – all before they even potentially begin treatment.
People who are unable to afford the costs associated with diagnostic and supplemental imaging might delay or forego this needed testing. This delay may mean the cancer has time to progress to more advanced disease before treatments begin, likely making it much deadlier and much more costly to treat.
The Access to Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD) Act would eliminate financial barriers that prevent people from accessing vitally important diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging. Urge your Members of Congress to support this critical legislation today!
