Advocate for COVID-19 Relief Funding for Education!
As COVID-19 continues to devastate the economy, the U.S. education system faces unprecedented budget shortfalls. Because of increased expenses to meet the needs of students since the start of the pandemic, it is clear that historic financial assistance is needed. When this new legislation is passed, it will make an investment of nearly $430 billion in child care, child abuse prevention, K-12 education, postsecondary education, adult education, and workforce development.

Part of this legislation includes $1 billion in funding for Title III of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which funds English language acquisition programs at the K-12 level. This past spring, TESOL joined over 40 education organizations in a call for this f funding to support young English learners in the United States.

The Coronavirus Child Care and Education Relief Act also establishes the Higher Education Relief Fund (HERF), which will provide over $132 billion in funding for students and institutions of higher education. Included in the HERF is a provision to reverse the Secretary of Education’s recent decision to exclude Dreamers from receiving COVID-19 relief aid that was authorized under the CARES Act. TESOL opposed the secretary’s decision and is glad to see this legislation will rectify this injustice.

Furthermore, this legislation invests over $1 billion in adult education and workforce development. This funding will support programs that serve adult English learners through adult and family literacy activities.

TESOL is asking you to take action today and tell the Senate to provide this much needed funding for our schools and the English learners they serve.
