The U.S. Forest Service has launched the next phase of the Tongass Forest Plan revision, opening a 30-day public comment period that runs through March 20, 2026. This is the public’s first formal opportunity to help define the priorities and direction that will guide how the Tongass is managed for the next two decades.
The Tongass Land Management Plan is a long-term framework for the 17-million-acre forest, similar to a community zoning plan. It establishes guidelines to inform more specific land management decisions about fish and wildlife habitat, recreation access and infrastructure, watershed restoration, and other forest uses.
Now is one of the most critical moments to make our voices heard, especially for people who live, work, and recreate on the Tongass. The outcomes of this planning process will influence the health and productivity of Southeast Alaska’s fisheries, forests, and communities for years to come. Early public input—from people who know and rely on the Tongass—can set the plan on a more positive trajectory.
This is your chance to help ensure the Tongass continues to meet the needs of Alaskans and visiting anglers, hunters, and backcountry enthusiasts. Please take a few minutes to submit a comment urging the Forest Service to prioritize the balanced management of Southeast Alaska’s world-class fish and wildlife habitat and unique recreation opportunities.
