For over a decade, Trout Unlimited worked to protect the greater Grand Canyon region from future uranium mining and, in 2023, Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument was designated. which was a culmination of efforts over the years by local Tribal Nations, conservation groups and a majority of Arizonans.
This national monument designation protects the people, fish and wildlife, and businesses who depend on the Grand Canyon watershed for their livelihood, as well as the incredible cultural and recreational opportunities this unique area contains.

We are writing to express support for the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument (Grand Canyon National Monument). This national monument designation protects the people, fish and wildlife, and businesses who depend on the Grand Canyon watershed for their livelihood, as well as the incredible cultural and recreational opportunities this unique area contains.
The Colorado River and its tributaries are the lifeblood of countless recreational, agricultural, and tourism-based businesses that employ thousands of Arizonans and put food on their tables every day. Numerous Indigenous and other communities count on the clean water provided from the river to sustain their lives.
As anglers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy and respect the area, we ask that you keep the Grand Canyon National Monument designation in place to protect the water and habitat of this critical landscape. Sportsmen and sportswomen are counting on you to preserve our public land fishing and hunting heritage.
