In the coming days, the House Agriculture Committee will consider the new Farm Bill. This legislation is critical to addressing hunger in the United States and around the world. While the bill makes efforts to improve aspects of nutrition assistance, it needs to do more to strengthen the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s largest anti-hunger program.
Specific recommendations to strengthen SNAP include
- delaying certain new requirements to allow states adequate time to carefully implement the changes and prevent disruptions in access, which would only harm those most in need, and
- eliminating the lifetime ban on SNAP for those who have served felony drug sentences in order to support successful reentry and stability.
Your voice is needed. Please join the bishops and other Catholic voices in urging the committee to strengthen SNAP’s effectiveness during the committee markup. You can read our joint letter to the committee here.
We encourage you to add your own personal story or thoughts about why strengthening the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is important to you and your community.
