Vietnam Veterans of America

Summary of Recent Veterans Administration Breakfast Meeting
March 24, 2025 by Chandler Howell

VVA President Jack McManus (far left), VVA VP Tom Burke (center), and other VVA team held a direct meeting with VA Secretary Doug Collins to discuss a number of critical issues affecting veterans. Two days later, VVA’s Executive Director of Government Affairs, James McCormick (on right), was invited to attend a breakfast meeting with Secretary Collins, during which valuable insights were shared regarding the VA’s strategic plans to streamline operations, reduce bureaucracy, and refocus efforts on enhancing the care and services provided to veterans.

From James McCormick, Executive Director, VVA Government Affairs:

On Thursday, March 20, we had a productive breakfast meeting with Secretary Doug Collins, members of the veteran's community, and his staff. The primary objective of this gathering was to discuss current operations within the Veterans Administration (VA) and to address specific questions and concerns.

During the meeting, I raised a critical question regarding transparency and the flow of information within the VA. I emphasized the importance of ongoing communication on issues that could impact the veteran's community, which Secretary Collins has been effectively addressing.

We also discussed recent media reports that have portrayed a concerning narrative regarding the VA's operations, particularly allegations of mass terminations and layoffs. It is crucial to recognize that, for the most part, veterans across America have not experienced any disruption in their access to care or services. We reiterated that we would not support indiscriminate firings and highlighted that we've only received two complaints from our State Presidents Council, which we promptly reported to the VA. Furthermore, these complaints stem from ongoing issues dating back to previous administrations.

Our message to the media and the public is clear: we seek civility and accuracy in reporting. The dissemination of unverified information only exacerbates anxiety among veterans, leading to unnecessary health complications. The Vietnam Veterans of America, as a congressionally chartered 501(c)(19) non-partisan veteran service organization, is committed to operating on facts rather than rumors.

The breakfast meeting allowed us to tackle many of the rumors and allegations circulating in the media. We focused on tangible issues, such as the critical need for reliable access to healthcare for veterans, especially in rural communities. It is unacceptable for veterans to face lengthy wait times for treatment when expedited options are available through a functioning Veterans Community Care Program.

We also discussed the necessity for large-scale collaborative efforts to enhance veterans' healthcare. The leadership within the VA is actively investigating delays in access to care and identifying their root causes. It is imperative that the VA remains focused on its mission to care for veterans and their families, upholding the promise made by President Abraham Lincoln.

While there may be movements within the VA that create discomfort, we remain cautiously optimistic. The Secretary has assured us that access to healthcare, both physical and mental health, will not be compromised. We must continue to engage in constructive dialogue, sharing verified information to accurately represent the needs and realities of our veterans.

As your Executive Director for Government Affairs, I urge all stakeholders to refrain from spreading unverified rumors. We remain dedicated to advocating for veterans and ensuring their voices are heard. If you have legitimate concerns or verifiable issues, please reach out directly to me.

In conclusion, we appreciate the opportunity to engage with Secretary Collins and his team. This meeting was a vital step towards addressing the misinformation surrounding VA operations and reaffirming our commitment to the well-being of veterans.
