From Cost to Care: The Role of AI in Healthcare
March 25, 2025 by Megan Boyd

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, offering solutions that can improve access, reduce costs, and enhance patient outcomes. A 2024 PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) survey found that 44 percent of consumers with significant health issues have recently delayed healthcare due to financial concerns. AI-powered tools can help mitigate these challenges by improving early detection of various diagnoses, optimizing personalized treatment plans, and reducing costly emergency interventions. For example, AI can help identify high-risk patients in need of preventive care, helping them manage conditions like high blood pressure before they escalate.

Beyond individual patient care, AI can also alleviate the burden of administrative tasks. Healthcare is currently facing a projected physician shortage of 86,000 physicians by 2036, on top of an overall shortage of 11 million healthcare workers by 2030. This makes AI’s role in streamlining workflows especially critical.

However, responsible AI adoption requires rigorous oversight and ongoing training to ensure safety and accuracy. AI has already demonstrated success in aiding the diagnosis of fractures, predicting strokes, and guiding treatment decisions, but it must complement – not replace – the clinical expertise and human nature of physicians. There is an incredible opportunity in healthcare to leverage this technology for better patient outcomes and cost efficiency.
