On Tuesday, January 13, the Georgia Senate passed important legislation strengthening the Peach State’s firearm preemption law by adding storage to the list of activities that local government cannot regulate. Senate Bill 204 (SB 204) is the first major pro-sportsmen bill headed to the Governor in 2026.
Email Governor Brian Kemp and ask him to continue supporting sportsmen by signing SB 204 into law.
How SB 204 Protects Georgia Gun Owners
SB 204 is designed to protect the rights of lawful sportsmen and firearm owners by standardizing gun storage laws across the state. Specifically, the bill:
- Prevents cities and counties from enacting their own ordinances regarding how firearms must be stored, including vehicles.
- Effectively strikes down local mandates, such as the recent Savannah ordinance that threatened gun owners with fines and jail time for leaving firearms in unlocked cars.
- Allows individuals "aggrieved" by local ordinances that conflict with state law to sue for damages up to $25,000 plus attorney fees.
Ending the Patchwork of Local Firearm Regulations
For too long, a "patchwork" of local regulations has made it difficult for law-abiding citizens to travel freely across Georgia without risking criminalization. SB 204 establishes a single statewide standard for firearm regulations that prevents local municipalities from eroding rights guaranteed by the state and allows sportsmen and gun owners to seek legal remedies when local authorities exceed their legislative authority.
Don’t forget to share this alert with your family, friends, and fellow sportsmen. Urge them to contact Governor Kemp and ask him to sign SB 204 into law.
Defending the Sportsman's Way of Life
There has never been a more crucial time in sportsmen’s history than now to be involved and engaged in protecting our way of life. If we remain silent, others will shape the outcome. We cannot allow that to happen in the Peach State. It is critical that you urge your family and friends to join you and the Sportsmen’s Alliance in the fight against the rising tide of animal extremism and gun control activism. The legacy of hunting, fishing, and trapping depends on our actions today.
