Take Action: Urge Congress to End Gun Violence & Protect Our Children
May 24, 2023, marks one year after the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde County, Texas that claimed the lives of 19 children and 2 educators.  School communities face the daily threat of gun violence and far too many communities and families nationwide are forever altered due to the trauma caused by similar events. Firearms now surpass auto accidents and other injuries as the leading cause of death for children under the age of 19 in the United States, affecting thousands of families and communities across the country.

Many of our nation’s horrific school shooting tragedies may have been prevented through commonsense gun violence prevention measures limiting access to military-style weapons, from Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX (2022) to Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, FL (2018) to Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT (2012). The passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in 2022, inclusive of a $1 billion investment in school-based mental health, was a critical legislative victory thanks to collective advocacy by key voices, such as PTA members like you, but it was unfortunately not enough to ensure our children’s physical safety from gun violence.

Contact your members of Congress today to urge them to support legislation prohibiting older youth from purchasing military-style weapons and restoring the federal Assault Weapons Ban. No parent or caregiver should fear for the safety of their child every time they go to school and children deserve a world where they can all reach their full potential and thrive.
