Ensure Children with SMA Can Access Educational Supports in School

The bipartisan Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees that children with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education tailored to their unique needs and delivered in the least restrictive environment.

Unfortunately, many families with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) struggle to access the educational supports their child needs to thrive in the classroom, as required under law.

The federal government funds and oversees IDEA programs -- and protects the rights of students with disabilities. It is critical that this oversight remain strong, especially in light of current reorganization and agency transfer efforts.
