Children and adults with SMA may benefit from assistive technology (AT) devices, such as mobility aides, screen readers, robotic arms, or adaptive utensils, for greater independence and support in their daily lives.
To expand awareness and access to AT devices and services, Congress created the Assistive Technology State Grant Program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. AT centers in all 50 states, U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia use the AT State Grant Program formula funds to:
- Operate AT equipment loan programs that allow individuals with disabilities to borrow and test AT devices before making a purchase,
- Organize hands-on demonstrations to showcase new and existing AT devices and their features,
- Manage state financing programs that make AT devices more affordable and accessible for residents with disabilities.
State AT programs ensure that people with SMA and other disabilities can keep up with technological advances that could greatly improve their independence and quality of life.
Tell Congress to fully fund state AT programs.
